What to Do if Your Xiaomi Can’t Connect to Wi-Fi

Using a modern phone is hard to imagine without constant access to the Internet. Outside, users prefer the mobile gigabytes provided by the operator. But it is much more advantageous and convenient to access the World Wide Web with a wireless local area network. But what to do if the Xiaomi smartphone does not connect to Wi-Fi?

Situation #1: Xiaomi previously worked with the Internet

One of the most common problems is when the Internet worked on Xiaomi but suddenly stopped. Most often, such a malfunction is related to the software part of the device, and in many cases, it can be solved independently at home. How exactly – now we will find out.

System failure in the phone

To begin with, we check the mode set in the smartphone. If it is “Airplane mode”, the Internet, of course, will not work. You can disable this option in the notification curtain.

Now determine whether the Wi-Fi is active at all. To do this, go to “Settings– “Internet” and look at the checkbox next to the tab “Wi-Fi”. If it is deactivated, move the slider to “On”.

Problems can also occur with a particular network. If the Internet is still not turned on, go to “Settings” and look at the “Available networks” list. Find yours and click “Forget” (or “Delete”. The name of the item is slightly different in different versions of MIUI).

Reboot the phone and router, and then re-authenticate the network by entering the login and password. As soon as the authentication is finished, the Wi-Fi should work.

The above options have not helped. Then the problem is more serious, but before radical methods, you should separately configure another router. About it in the next paragraph.

Confused router settings

Actions with the router can help if the phone does not work with a particular access point. Most often, the problem is in the encryption: the default is the WPA2 PSK standard for maximum security. But not all devices work with this type.

Try changing the standard to the standard WDS or WPA. We do not recommend turning off the security completely. You can set the necessary settings on the web page by going to the address indicated on the router’s box. If you do not have this information, contact your ISP.

You can also change the signal frequency from bgn to bg. Also, take a closer look at the country of residence you set. Try changing the location. Again, these options will only work if Wi-Fi has stopped connecting to a particular access point.

Smartphone connects to the network but can’t access the Internet

There is almost one working method here – changing the static IP address. The router sets its address, which begins to conflict with the user’s data. In this case, the Internet icon is active, but web pages are either loaded at extremely low speed.

Have you encountered such a situation? Then let’s try changing the network settings:
  1. Open “Settings” and go to “Wi-Fi”;
  2. Find our connected network and click “Change Network”. Go down to “Advanced Settings” below;
  3. Tap on “IP Settings” and replace the “DCHP” value with the custom one;
  4. Next, enter a new IP address, which must be requested from the provider. That’s all. After these manipulations, we will forget about the annoying, slow-working Internet or its complete absence of it.

Finally, check if you have a VPN enabled. A virtual private connection is a great tool to improve security while visiting Internet sites. But sometimes, this feature works with bugs.

Sometimes your Wi-Fi connection goes down

Unstable Internet performance is usually due to mechanical problems. This includes a weak router signal, malfunctioning drivers, or a broken Wi-Fi-Pay module. Also, malfunctions can be observed if the smartphone is too far from the wireless network signal source.

Therefore, after noticing an interruption in the Internet, first of all, check the serviceability of the router and, if possible, contact a specialist.

Situation #2: The smartphone doesn’t connect to Wi-Fi in the beginning

The situation worsens if the phone does not recognize the network immediately after purchase. What to do in such a case?

Mechanical damage

If we are talking about failures with the router, physical effects are usually to blame: the wire broke, the router fell, you poured water on it, etc. In such cases, only experienced craftsmen can help.

The Wi-Fi module on the phone can also get damaged for trivial reasons: dropped on a hard surface or crushed. At home, replacing the Wi-Fi device is quite difficult.

Defective model

The cause of the inoperability of the Internet can be both in the router and in the phone itself. If you bought a new Xiaomi and it does not connect to the network, but other devices are functioning well, then the smartphone is to blame. To avoid such troubles, follow a few simple rules before making a purchase:

  • Buy your tech only from reliable sellers (preferably local stores).
  • Always check that the phone works and ask to connect the device to the Internet.
  • Demand a warranty so that if there are any problems, you can either return the device or get it repaired for free.
  • Give preference only to stable global firmware (at most, look at the Global Developer ROM if you are an experienced user). Non-functional Wi-Fi on a custom or “Vietnamese” shell is common.

Today we found out what you can do if the Xiaomi Wi-Fi does not work. This is a very common problem, but it can be easily addressed by reading our instructions and recommendations. For more information, please ask in the comments. Good luck!
