How to Unlink MI Account From Xiaomi Phone Correctly

Mi account has huge popularity among Xiaomi owners, as it is a convenient storage and protection of the smartphone in case of loss/theft. But still, there are situations when the smartphone no longer needs an account. Unfortunately, not all users know how to correctly unlink the Mi account from the Xiaomi phone so as not to delete it completely and, in a pinch, restore access. This is what we will talk about in this article.

What you need to do so that after a reboot, the smartphone will not require access to the old account:

  1. Log out of the account on the desired phone.
  2. Unlink your device from the Mi Cloud account through your PC or mobile browser.

Proper Mi-account unlinking (have access)

For this procedure, you must know the password and phone number (or email address) you specified when you registered, as these details are always requested to log in to the account. If you do not have access to the telephone number or e-mail address, you must restore the password from the Mi account or try the method below.

Via phone

  1. Look for the “Settings” icon on the home screen, and open it.
  2. Go to the “Accounts” section, where you select “Mi Account”.
  3. A page appears on which the user data and security information are located. At the very bottom, we see “Sign out of account“. Click on it.
  4. The system will ask for a password to confirm the unlinking of the account and enter it.
  5. Also, MIUI may ask for the security code sent to your smartphone or the usual captcha.
  6. Done. The phone is successfully unlinked from your Xiaomi account.

Via computer

  1. Go to the official Mi Cloud website.
  2. Enter the details of your account. You can also use login via Facebook if the account is linked.
  3. Once you successfully log in, you should log out of your Mi Cloud account. We also recommend that you learn how you should use Mi Cloud.
  4. Next, in some applications (contacts, messages, gallery, and others), you need to select “Settings” (gear icon).
  5. Now at the bottom of the screen, you need to find the“My devices” area.
  6. Select the desired phone or tablet in this area and press“Delete device“.
  7. In some cases, the system may ask for additional authentication.
  8. Done.

How to unlink a Mi account from a phone number or email

This method will be useful for those who want to change their account’s phone number or email address without deleting it. I also want to tell you that the MIUI version doesn’t make any difference in this operation.

  1. Go to i.mi.com, and log in to your Xiaomi account.
  2. Now in the upper right corner, look for your account ID or name and avatar.
  3. Click on the contact icon (or avatar), and the menu appears.
  4. In the menu, click on “Account”.
  5. The system redirects us from i.mi.com to account.xiaomi.com.
  6. The first tab is “Security”. This is what we need.
  7. Now choose what we want to unlink Email or phone to restore the account.
  8. The system will ask for a password for additional verification.
  9. Done. You can delete the email address or phone number or link other contacts.

Keep in mind that your account needs at least one contact to regain access to it, or your phone or email.

Unlinking a Mi account if you can’t access it

Here the process is already more complicated and inconvenient. If there is no chance to restore access, you will have to resort to extreme measures: resetting the device or reflashing it.

You can also try to contact Xiaomi support, describing your problem in detail. In this case, the chance that you will be answered quickly and promptly is small. To confirm that you are the owner of the smartphone, you will have to provide several proofs:

  • serial number of the device;
  • date, place of purchase, and receipt;
  • photos of the packaging, etc.

Resetting settings

After a reset, the first time you connect your phone to the network (i.e., during initial setup), you will be prompted to enter the password for the Mi account associated with this device.

  1. Before starting the operation, you need to save important data on internal memory or a memory card. It is best to use selective backups. After backup, files are transferred to the SD card or computer.
  2. Now go to TWRP. You need to unlock the bootloader and put the custom recovers if it is not installed.
  3. Switching the phone off, wait a minute to stop all processes.
  4. Access the recovery by pressing the volume up button and the power button, and hold it until it vibrates.
  5. Choose the item “Wipe Data” (clean/delete). Confirm the action and wait for the end of the wipe.

Reflashing

Of course, not every user will dare to reflash because of the Mi account, but if you are considering such an option, it is best to use a special utility MiFlash (you need an unlocked bootloader).

But even that doesn’t guarantee that the account will unlink 100 percent. Unlinking happened on earlier versions of MIUI, mostly on the seventh. But the algorithm: install an old version – reflash – unbind, not everyone will like it.

FAQ

How to sync my Mi account back?

If you completely deleted your account, it cannot be restored. This has been mentioned many times before confirmation. And if you just unlinked it, log in to it on your device.

Can I recover my password using my phone number?

Yes, this is the easiest and best option.

I can’t unlink my account, and there is an error

First, check if the account is working and if it is valid at all. This kind of error can occur if your Cloud is blocked.

Can I perform a reset using the system’s built-in recovers?

Unfortunately, such recovers do not do full wipes, only partial ones are possible, and they are not suitable in our case. We recommend getting root rights, unlocking the bootloader, and installing full custom recoveries.

As you can see, unlinking the Mi account without resorting to a full deletion is quite easy and fast. But you should remember that you risk locking your device if you incorrectly unlink your phone from the account or delete the same account without first unlinking.
